Review: The Home Bargains curry sauce everyone says tastes like McDonald's (2024)

Chips and curry sauce - it's generally a winner. It's a rewarding combination of fried carbs and spicy gloop that can rarely go wrong. Some hardy souls even put cheese on theirs, but that's another conversation.

Whether it's as a treat for dinner or a much needed stomach filler after a heavy night, most people like chips and curry sauce.

Away from the chippy, another avenue for this combo is at McDonald's where you can dip the fast-food giant's famous fries into its sweet curry sauce.

The drawback with that is you have to go a McDonald's and either sit down to eat in or wait in the drive-through queue for a conversation through a microphone where neither you or the person serving you can hear each other properly.

Now though, a new product has been launched which is said to be just like McDonald's curry sauce - and it only costs 99p.

This is Hela's Spice Ketchup and it comes in range of flavours, including curry and it's on sale now at Home Bargains stores.

The new product caused a stir on the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK Facebook group, where fans decided it tasted just like the McDonald's version.

I'll be comparing the two sauces, analysing whether they do taste the same, and whether that, in fact, is a good thing.

Do they taste the same?

I tried the McDonald's dip first, and to be honest, I didn't like it. It lives it up to its name in that it's very sweet. It's also quite vinegary. It tastes a bit like sugar, vinegar and that cheap curry powder that's been on your shelf for five years mixed together.

The Hela sauce is very similar, but it's actually quite a lot nicer. It's less sweet and vinegary, and tastes more like the stuff you get in the chip shop.

This is handy, as I could only get an 800ml bottle online, which is probably still likely to spend a good few years on my shelf.

To be honest, I'll be sticking to ketchup.

Can you get it in Reading?

There is a Home Bargains in Rose Kiln Lane in Reading where I went to get some, but, alas, it didn't go well.

I couldn't find it on the shelf, and it turns out that's because they didn't have any.

I spoke to a member of staff and they said the "bigger" stores get new products first, meaning I'd have to trek over to Basingstoke.

That wasn't going to happen on that particular night.

However, I managed to get some via Amazon with the 800ml bottle setting me back £7.89. So unless you want to go through gallons of the stuff it might be best to make that trip to Basingstoke.

Home Bargains will eventually stock the sauce, and in bottles costing just 99p.
